M4.0 Aftershock Shakes Sigi Again
A magnitude 4.0 aftershock shook Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, on Friday evening (26/6). The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the shallow quake was part of the aftershock sequence following the magnitude 6.7 earthquake that occurred on 16 June 2026.
Head of the BMKG Geophysical Station Class I Palu, Djati Cipto Kuncoro, said the earthquake occurred at around 20:47 WIB with a depth of 4 kilometres and was felt by residents in several areas. “This shallow earthquake occurred at around 20:47 WIB and was clearly felt by the community,” Djati said in Palu on Friday.
BMKG recorded the epicentre at coordinates 1.26 South Latitude and 120.31 East Longitude, approximately 49 kilometres east of Sigi Regency. According to Djati, based on the epicentre location and hypocentre depth, the earthquake was triggered by activity on the Palolo Fault.
Based on shakemap estimates and community reports, the earthquake was felt in Sigi Regency and Palu City with an intensity of II–III MMI. On this scale, vibrations are felt by a few people indoors, light hanging objects sway, and the shaking feels like a large truck passing. “To date, there have been no reports of damage caused by the tremor,” he said.
Djati explained that the magnitude 4.0 earthquake was part of the aftershock activity following the main magnitude 6.7 earthquake that shook Central Sulawesi on 16 June 2026 at 10:27 WIB. As of Friday (26/6) at 21:50 WIB, BMKG had recorded a total of 1,488 aftershocks, with the largest measuring magnitude 5.3.
BMKG urged the public to remain calm, not to be easily influenced by unverified information, and to continue following official information provided by BMKG regarding the development of seismic activity in the region.
