M 7.7 Earthquake in the Celebes Sea, BMKG Issues Tsunami Warning

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early tsunami warning after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Celebes Sea today, 8 June 2026. According to the updated tsunami early warning (Warning Tsunami PD-2), the earthquake occurred at 06:37:42 WIB, with the epicentre located approximately 244 kilometres northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi.

BMKG stated that the earthquake has the potential to trigger tsunamis in several regions, namely Gorontalo, East Kalimantan, North Maluku, Central Sulawesi, and North Sulawesi. “An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 has occurred, located 244 kilometres northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, at 06:37:42 WIB on 8 June 2026, with potential tsunami impacts in Gorontalo, East Kalimantan, North Maluku, Central Sulawesi, and North Sulawesi,” the BMKG early warning stated.

BMKG has requested that information regarding the potential tsunami be immediately disseminated to communities in the affected areas. Residents are advised to remain calm but vigilant and to follow instructions from disaster management authorities. “The tsunami potential must be communicated to the public. Follow the early tsunami warnings from the BPBD, BNPB, and BMKG,” BMKG wrote in its alert.
