M 7.7 Earthquake in Philippines Felt in Gorontalo, Students and Teachers Scramble Outdoors

Tremors from a magnitude (M) 7.7 earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines, were felt as far as Gorontalo City. Students and teachers at SDN 41 Hulontalangi experienced panic and rushed out of their classrooms after tsunami early warning sirens sounded in the region.

“There is information regarding schoolchildren there. The students of SD 41 Hulonthalangi in Gorontalo City panicked and exited their classrooms because the siren sounded,” said Moh Tahir Laendeng, a disaster analyst at the Gorontalo Provincial BPBD, as reported on Monday (8/6/2026).

Students and teachers immediately gathered in the school field following the tsunami warning issued by BMKG. The analyst added, “The siren was sounded by the school itself by the teachers, which caused the children to be frightened due to the earthquake.”

In footage observed, numerous students could be seen rushing out of their classrooms and hurrying towards the school field after receiving instructions from their teachers.

The southern coastal region of Mindanao, Philippines, was struck by the M 7.7 earthquake on Monday (8/6) at 07:37:42 WITA. BMKG reported that the earthquake’s epicentre was located at sea at coordinates 5.80° N and 125.14° E.
