M 7.7 Earthquake Hits Philippines, Tremors Felt in Manado to Minahasa

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake has struck the southern Mindanao region of the Philippines, with tremors felt across various parts of Indonesia.

“The earthquake was felt in Morotai, North Halmahera, with an intensity scale of IV MMI; during the day, it was felt by many people in their homes, outdoors by several individuals, with some windows breaking, doors creaking, and walls making noise,” stated the Head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, during a virtual press conference on Monday (8/6/2026).

Additionally, the earthquake was felt in Toli-Toli, North Gorontalo Regency, with an intensity scale of III-IV, where vibrations were felt by almost all residents, waking many from their sleep.

An intensity scale of III MMI was also recorded in several areas, including Batang Dua, Ternate, West Halmahera, Gorontalo, South Halmahera, East Halmahera, Parigi Moutong, Manado, Minahasa, Palu, Bitung, East Bolaang Mongondow, and Central Halmahera.

BMKG stated that, as of now, there is no data regarding damage caused by the earthquake. Meanwhile, tsunamis have occurred in several areas, namely Kedi in North Maluku, Ulu Sia, and Melonguane. In Kedi, the tsunami height reached 0.09 metres, while Ulu Sia recorded 0.18 metres and Melonguane 0.19 metres.
