A magnitude (M) 4.3 earthquake occurred in Cianjur, West Java. The earthquake, which was felt as far as DKI Jakarta, was classified as a shallow earthquake.

“Considering the location of the epicentre and the depth of the hypocentre, the earthquake that occurred is a type of shallow earthquake caused by active fault activity,” said the Head of BMKG Region II South Tangerang, Hartanto, in a statement on Tuesday (1/9/2026).

He stated that the epicentre of the earthquake was located at coordinates 6.91 degrees South Latitude and 107.10 degrees East Longitude. The centre of the earthquake was on land.

“The depth (of the earthquake) is 4 kilometres,” added Hartanto.

Hartanto noted that the earthquake, which occurred at 17:53 WIB, was felt most heavily in Cianjur with an intensity of MMI III-IV. The tremors were also felt in the areas of Sukabumi City, Cibadak, Nagrak, Warung Kondang, Cimahi, and Cilaku with an intensity of MMI II-III, as well as in Bandung City, Cibubur, and Sukaraja with an intensity of MMI II.

An intensity of MMI III-IV means that if the earthquake occurs during the day, it is felt by many people inside houses; MMI II-III means vibrations are clearly felt inside houses, with tremors feeling as if a truck is passing by; and MMI II means vibrations are felt by a few people and light hanging objects sway.

“However, up to this point, there have been no reports regarding building damage as a result of the earthquake,” said Hartanto.
