Lula seeks clemency for Brazilian in RI

BRAZIL: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday
urged his Indonesian counterpart to grant clemency to a Brazilian
man sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug smuggling.

Lula's spokesman, Andre Singer, told reporters that Lula sent
a message to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono
conceding that Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira's crime was serious
but that Brazilian law does not include the death penalty.

In his message Lula says executing Moreira, a hang-gliding
instructor from Rio de Janeiro, would "cause enormous popular
shock," Singer said.

An Indonesian court last year found Moreira guilty of
smuggling 13.4 kilograms of cocaine in a hang-glider frame. --AFP
