Lukashenko Welcomes Prabowo's Plan to Open Indonesian Embassy in Belarus
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has welcomed Indonesia’s plan to open an embassy and establish direct flight routes to his country. Lukashenko expressed his appreciation to President Prabowo Subianto following their meeting in Jakarta on Thursday, 2 July 2026.
Lukashenko and Prabowo issued a joint press statement after the meeting. “I am grateful to the President for the plan to open an Indonesian embassy,” Lukashenko stated at the Merdeka Palace.
Currently, Indonesia’s representation in Belarus is handled concurrently with Russia. Indonesia maintains an Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Moscow, which also serves as the Indonesian government’s representative to the Republic of Belarus.
Lukasende also appreciated Prabowo’s openness to establishing direct Indonesia-Belarus flight routes. “The Belarusian people are very interested in visiting Indonesia,” he said.
He noted that the Belarusian government is paying significant attention to the tourism sector. Lukashenko is also open to discussing visa waiver cooperation between Belarus and Indonesia.
“I also thank the President for the support in developing people-to-people relations between our two countries, including discussions regarding visa-free facilities and the opening of flight connectivity in the future,” he added.
Lukashenko stated that Belarus views Indonesia not only as an economic partner but also as a highly attractive tourist destination. “We hope it becomes easier for the Belarusian people to visit Indonesia, and likewise, for the Indonesian people to visit Belarus,” said the leader, who has served as President of Belarus since 1994.
On the same occasion, Prabowo expressed his appreciation for Lukashenko’s visit to Jakarta. “I am confident that this momentum will further strengthen the Indonesia-Belarus partnership and open opportunities for broader cooperation,” said the Chairman of the Gerindra Party.
Lukashenko arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday, 1 July 2026. He was welcomed by Minister of Defence Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin at Halim Perdanakusuma Airbase, East Jakarta. That evening, Lukashenko stayed at the State Palace in Jakarta.
Foreign Minister Sugiono noted that staying at the Presidential Palace was Lukashenko’s own wish. He stated that the Indonesian government fulfilled this request as a mark of respect to the President.
According to Sugiono, other heads of state usually prefer to stay in hotels. “This time, he expressed the desire to stay at the Palace,” said Sugiono.
