Lukashenko Welcomes Prabowo's Plan to Open Indonesian Embassy in Belarus

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has welcomed Indonesia’s plan to open an embassy and direct flight routes to his country. Lukashenko expressed his appreciation to President Prabowo Subianto following their meeting in Jakarta on Thursday, 2 July 2026. “I thank the President for the plan to open an Indonesian embassy,” Lukashenko said at the Merdeka Palace. Currently, Indonesia’s representation to Belarus is handled concurrently by the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow, Russia. Lukashenko also appreciated Prabowo’s openness to opening direct flight routes between Indonesia and Belarus. “The people of Belarus are very interested in visiting Indonesia,” he said. He noted that the Belarusian government pays great attention to the tourism sector. Lukashenko is also open to discussing visa-free cooperation between Belarus and Indonesia. “I also thank the President for his support in developing people-to-people relations, including discussions on visa-free facilities and the opening of future flight connectivity,” he said. Lukashenko stated that Belarus views Indonesia not only as an economic partner but also as a highly attractive tourist destination. “We hope that the people of Belarus can visit Indonesia more easily, and likewise, the people of Indonesia can visit Belarus more easily,” said the man who has served as President of Belarus since 1994. On the same occasion, Prabowo expressed his appreciation for Lukashenko’s visit to Jakarta. “I am confident this momentum will further strengthen the Indonesia-Belarus partnership and open up broader cooperation opportunities,” said the Gerindra Party chairman. Lukashenko arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, and was welcomed by Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in East Jakarta. He stayed overnight at the State Palace in Jakarta. Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that staying at the Presidential Palace was Lukashenko’s own request, and the Indonesian government granted it as a form of respect to the President.
