Jakarta — Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the head of the National Economic Council, predicted that a war between Iran, Israel and the United States would last longer than one month. He said there are no signs of Iran weakening even though several of its leaders have been killed. ‘I don’t think this war will be over within four weeks or the next month,’ Luhut said in a post on his personal Instagram on Thursday (5 May 2026). ‘If you look at the spirit of the Iranian people, after almost four decades of embargo, they have not wavered.’ According to Luhut, Iran’s ammunition supplies are starting to dwindle but production continues. If US efforts to replace the regime in Iran fail, the conflict could last a long time. He reminded that Indonesia should not join in hostility towards Iran. ‘We should not become adversaries with them; there is no use in that,’ he said. The Strait of Hormuz is the main route for energy supply from Gulf states. Closing that strait would affect energy supplies and the sustainability of the state budget. ‘Of course, it is not only Indonesia that would be affected; many countries would be affected, but we, the Indonesian people, must stay united in facing all this,’ Luhut said.
