Luhut Encourages Youth to Emulate Try Sutrisno: Preserve National Unity

National Economic Council Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan remembered the sixth Vice President of Indonesia, Try Sutrisno, as an exemplary figure full of loyalty. According to him, Try Sutrisno possessed a strong spirit of national unity.

Luhut recounted that his relationship with Try had been long-standing, dating back to when he held the rank of colonel. One particularly memorable moment was when they walked together whilst climbing Mount Halimun.

“Walking up Mount Halimun, I was still a colonel at that time, although he fell during that journey, but he demonstrated exemplary character and provided an example that we continue to emulate today and share with young people in Indonesia,” Luhut said after attending Try Sutrisno’s funeral procession at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in Jakarta on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Luhut stated that Try Sutrisno demonstrated perseverance and continued to set a positive example for younger generations. According to him, this exemplary character became a value that he continues to emulate to this day.

Luhut regarded Try as a commendable figure worthy of serving as a role model, particularly regarding loyalty to the nation and the sitting president at that time. He acknowledged having learnt greatly from Try’s steadfastness in upholding his commitments.

“Pak Try was a good man, truly a role model because of the loyalty he demonstrated, which I also learnt—such unwavering loyalty to the sitting president,” he said.

Luhut mentioned that his last meeting with Try occurred some time ago. Despite being unwell, Try was said to have consistently demonstrated a strong fighting spirit.

“He always felt well and maintained high fighting spirit, even though we knew he was ill, but he remained positive,” he expressed.

Furthermore, Luhut urged young people to emulate Try’s character and exemplary conduct, which always prioritised national unity and cohesion.

“Yes, young people, follow the example of Pak Try, which can serve as a role model and exemplar in this nation—always speaking of unity and cohesion, do not easily disparage others. Listen carefully, examine the data. I believe Pak Try set a good example in that regard,” he said.

Try Sutrisno passed away this morning at RSPAD Gatot Subroto Hospital after a 16-day treatment. Try Sutrisno was subsequently laid in state at a funeral home at Jalan Purwakarta Number 6 RT 08 RW 05, Menteng, Central Jakarta.

Try Sutrisno was buried with full military honours at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery. Prabowo led the funeral procession as inspector.
