Luhut Calls for DSI System Integration with NSW, Customs and Tax
National Economic Council (DEN) Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has called for a major overhaul of the system at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) under the Ministry of Finance. He believes the customs authority should leverage artificial intelligence (AI).
According to him, the reform is necessary to enhance the effectiveness of customs operations, especially with the establishment of the state-owned enterprise (BUMN) for commodity export management, PT Danantara Sumber Daya Indonesia (DSI).
“I think the Customs Directorate General needs reform—why not? If it’s with this body (DSI). But again, I trust in the system, a digitalised system based on AI,” Luhut said at the DEN office in Jakarta on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
“A digitalised system based on AI—I am very much in favour of that,” he stressed.
Luhut stated that AI systems cannot be deceived. Such systems also reduce face-to-face interactions in business processes and licensing, minimising opportunities for fraud. If implemented, he is confident national revenue will not leak.
Luhut has also pushed for AI use within DSI’s operations. He revealed he has contacted Danantara’s CEO and wants the DSI system connected to the National Single Window (NSW) and tax systems. Once linked, AI would process the data, catching dishonest companies or exporters.
“Now, we’ve already spoken with Mr Rosan last night. I urged him to call a team to discuss, which will connect to Mr Suha’s office, to the National Single Window, and to tax—all interconnected,” he explained.
“And then AI will read everything, so there’s no way to escape,” he added.
