Luck brings prize

JAKARTA (JP): When lady luck smiles on you, you can even turn misfortune into millions of deutsche mark (DM). It happened to Toto Raharjo, a photographer from Yogyakarta, who won the first prize of a photography contest held last year by the German embassy with the theme "Germany-Indonesia: The meeting of two cultures."

"I got only a second to take this picture. I tried to take a second shot, but I found that there was no more film left," Toto explained about the winning picture entitled Trying to understand each other which he took at Yogyakarta's Kraton (royal palace).

The picture depicts two men, an expatriate wearing a tie and carrying a tape recorder and a Javanese man wearing a surjan Javanese costume, in conversation.

"I took it with black and white film, but I developed it with color photo processing," Toto told German Ambassador to Indonesia Heinrich Seemann who presented the prizes yesterday.

For the winning photo Toto received DM 2,000. The second and third prizes were respectively won by Hariyanto, a photographer of the Jawa Pos daily, and Klaus Dauselt, a German who is temporarily based in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. (als)
