LRT Jabodebek Ensures Normal Operations Amid Volcanic Ash Spread
The Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Bekasi light rail transit (LRT Jabodebek) has confirmed that its operations remain normal amid the spread of volcanic ash caused by activity at Mount Anak Krakatau. Monitoring of operational conditions, readiness of facilities and infrastructure, and coordination among field personnel is being carried out continuously to keep passenger journeys safe and comfortable.
LRT Jabodebek Public Relations Manager Radhitya Mardika said monitoring is being conducted on an ongoing basis following the spread of volcanic ash in several areas. “So far, the condition has not affected LRT Jabodebek operations and journeys continue to run normally,” he said in an official statement.
In terms of operations, LRT Jabodebek uses a Grade of Automation (GoA) Level 3 system, which allows train journeys to run automatically. Nevertheless, journeys are still monitored by staff, including train attendants on board, to ensure conditions can be observed directly.
The monitoring also covers visibility conditions during journeys. Train attendants are promptly monitoring conditions on the ground and coordinating if there are any changes requiring action.

For information, the LRT Jabodebek propulsion system uses a third rail whose upper section is equipped with a protective cover. This serves as an early protection measure to help shield components from foreign objects that could potentially strike the propulsion system.
To date, monitoring of signalling, facilities, infrastructure, and operational conditions continues to be carried out to ensure journeys continue to meet safety requirements.
“In facing conditions like this, LRT Jabodebek applies a safety management system in every operation. Monitoring and coordination continue to be carried out so that customer journeys remain safe and comfortable,” said Radhitya.
LRT Jabodebek has urged users to remain calm and to monitor operational developments through official LRT Jabodebek communication channels. In addition, users are advised to wear masks when carrying out outdoor activities to protect their health.
