LPSK Provides Protection to KontraS Activist Andrie Yunus, Victim of Acid Attack
The Indonesian Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) has announced that it is providing protection to Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, who became a victim of an acid attack in Salemba, Jakarta. LPSK is providing protection to Andrie as determined by the LPSK Leadership Court decision.
“On Monday, 16 March 2026, LPSK through its Leadership Court (SMPL) decided to provide protection to AY as a victim in the form of physical protection through close protection officers, facilitation of medical assistance, and fulfilment of procedural rights during the legal process. In this decision, LPSK also provides assistance and/or protection to the victim’s family and protection to related witnesses,” said LPSK Chair Achmadi to journalists on Tuesday (17/3/2026).
He stated that LPSK received protection requests from victim AY, witness RF, and family member A in the case of the acid attack against the KontraS activist. Achmadi affirmed that LPSK guarantees the safety of the victim and witnesses and ensures the legal process can proceed without pressure.
The protection provided to victim AY includes physical protection through close protection officers, fulfilment of procedural rights in the judicial process, and medical assistance including regular medical care. Meanwhile, witnesses receive protection in the form of fulfilment of procedural rights to ensure witnesses can provide testimony safely during the legal process.
For family members of the victim, Achmadi explained that protection includes fulfilment of procedural rights, temporary living expense assistance, and compensation for temporary housing or safe house costs.
The protection programme is provided for a period of six months from the signing of the statement of willingness and/or protection agreement, and may be extended or adjusted according to needs and developments in case handling.
LPSK affirmed that the provision of this protection is part of the state’s commitment to guaranteeing the safety and fulfilment of the rights of witnesses and victims during the legal process. It considered the acid attack case a serious incident that must be promptly investigated and processed transparently according to applicable legal provisions.
According to LPSK, in this process, witnesses and victims must receive adequate protection, including for human rights defenders, whether individuals, groups, or organisations that play a role in efforts to respect, protect, and fulfil human rights in various sectors and issues.
Furthermore, Achmadi also stated that LPSK has conducted an assessment of the level of threat faced by the applicants, including recovery needs for the protected persons and support for families affected by the criminal act. He emphasised that LPSK strongly condemns the acid attack against Andrie Yunus.
“This action is contrary to the principles of human rights and the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which Indonesia has ratified through Law No. 5 of 1998,” read the statement.
Achmadi also stated that LPSK continues to coordinate intensively with law enforcement authorities and related agencies to ensure that protection for the victim, witnesses, and family members runs optimally whilst supporting effective case handling. He also urged those who know or have important information related to the incident not to hesitate to provide statements in the investigation and inquiry process.
Previously, LPSK provided emergency protection to Andrie Yunus from 13 to 16 March 2026. Emergency protection included medical assistance services and physical protection through close protection officers at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM).
