The Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) has granted emergency protection to Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), who was attacked with caustic acid by unknown assailants.

LPSK Deputy Chairwoman Sri Suparyati stated that the agency provided emergency protection to the victim one day after the incident, on 13 March 2026.

“This emergency protection aims to provide the victim with a sense of security immediately after the criminal act occurred,” said Sri Suparyati in a written statement on Sunday, 15 March 2026.

Initial measures undertaken by LPSK include coordination with Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) regarding the victim’s medical treatment, intensive coordination with KontraS’s working body, provision of physical protection through close security by LPSK protection officers, and initial assessment conducted jointly with the victim’s family to identify further protection needs.

Sri Suparyati stated that the protection request to LPSK was submitted on 13 March 2026 by the victim’s father. In the request, the family applied for several protection service programmes, including securing procedural rights, physical protection through close security, and medical assistance.

LPSK decided to provide emergency protection in the form of medical assistance and physical protection after considering the victim’s condition requiring immediate treatment. Sri explained that emergency protection was granted by considering the existence of security vulnerabilities to the victim’s safety, the requirements of law enforcement proceedings, and the need for immediate medical treatment or physical protection.

Physical protection consists of close monitoring and security by LPSK protection officers whilst the victim receives treatment at RSCM. Regarding medical services, LPSK may also collaborate with local government, the Ministry of Health, and other institutions to ensure the victim receives necessary healthcare.

LPSK stated it will continue to monitor the victim’s condition whilst ensuring the victim’s rights are fulfilled in the ongoing legal process. Sri also urged law enforcement authorities to quickly identify the perpetrator of the acid attack to provide a sense of justice for the victim and ensure such violent acts do not recur.

Andrie Yunus sustained chemical burns after being attacked with caustic acid by unknown assailants on Thursday evening, 12 March 2026, at approximately 23:37 Western Indonesia Time on Jalan Salemba I Talang, Central Jakarta. Yunus was attacked by two persons riding motorcycles whilst returning home after recording a podcast at the YLBHI office titled “Remilitarisation and Judicial Review of the Military Law”.

Jane Rosalina, Head of KontraS’s Impunity Monitoring Division, stated that medical examinations showed the victim sustained chemical burns covering approximately 24 per cent of his body as a result of the inflammatory reaction from the caustic liquid contacting his skin. The wounds were primarily located on the face, particularly the right side, including the right eye, both hands, and the chest area.

“Of the various wounds sustained, the most serious condition is in the right eye and it has currently received specialised treatment from an eye surgery specialist,” Jane told Tempo on Saturday, 14 March 2026.

Given the severity of the wounds, the victim requires intensive care under sterile conditions to ensure optimal recovery. “We fully respect the medical treatment process conducted by the medical team and the hospital,” said Jane.
