Manokwari – The Class III Women’s Correctional Institution (LPP) in Manokwari, West Papua, has proposed eight female inmates for special sentence remission or reduction of sentences on the occasion of Idul Fitri 1447 Hijriah.

The head of LPP Class III Manokwari, Lince Bela, stated in Manokwari on Monday that eight of the 13 Muslim inmates proposed have met both administrative and substantive requirements in accordance with applicable legal regulations.

“The remaining five individuals have not met the requirements and therefore were not proposed,” Bela said.

He noted that three inmates were proposed for sentence reduction of 15 days, three will receive one month remission, whilst proposals for one month 15 days remission and two months remission were each made for one person.

Remission is a form of state recognition to inmates who have demonstrated positive behavioural changes during their rehabilitation period in correctional institutions.

“The remission proposal is conducted through the integrated system of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) under the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections,” he explained.

Each inmate is required to participate in rehabilitation programmes encompassing spiritual development and vocational training, including agriculture, horticulture, culinary arts, sewing training, traditional Papuan net and bag weaving (noken), and batik.

These form criteria for general remission and religious holiday remission proposals. However, if violations occur, the LPP will submit register F against the inmate in question.

“The names of those receiving remission are already registered in the system, but if there are violations we submit register F. There is one person we did not propose,” Bela stated.

Currently, LPP Class III Manokwari has provided a dedicated telecommunications facility (wartelsuspas) for inmates to communicate with families and legal advisers at no cost. This facility aims to prevent unauthorised mobile phone use within cell blocks and mitigate potential security and order disturbances.

“We also have a primary health clinic. We work with Maripi Health Centre to conduct health examinations for inmates,” Bela added.
