The Education Fund Management Institution (LPDP) has expressed regret over statements made by one of its alumni, identified by the initials DS, who declared “only I should be an Indonesian citizen, not my children.” In the wake of the remarks, LPDP has summoned DS’s husband, identified as AP, who is also a scholarship recipient.

“LPDP is currently conducting an internal review regarding the allegations. LPDP is summoning AP to request clarification, and will proceed with enforcement action and sanctions up to and including full repayment of all scholarship funds should it be proven that the obligation to contribute in Indonesia has not been fulfilled,” LPDP stated on its Instagram account on Saturday (21 February 2026).

AP, the husband of DS, currently retains the status of scholarship recipient. However, he is suspected of not having completed his contribution obligations after finishing his studies.

“LPDP is committed to enforcing rules fairly, consistently, and responsibly for all awardees and alumni, and to continuing to uphold institutional integrity in delivering maximum benefit for Indonesia,” the institution said.

Under LPDP regulations, all awardees and alumni are required to fulfil a period of service contribution in Indonesia lasting twice the duration of their studies plus one year. As for DS, who made the viral statement, she completed her master’s degree and was declared to have graduated on 31 August 2017.

DS has also completed her full service period in accordance with the regulations. “Accordingly, LPDP no longer has any legal obligation with the individual concerned,” the institution stated.

The viral video was uploaded by a woman using the Instagram account @sasetyaningtyas. In the footage, she is seen opening a long-awaited package containing a letter from the United Kingdom Home Office.

The letter confirmed that her second child had officially been granted British citizenship. The woman also displayed a British passport that arrived together with the letter.

“This package isn’t just any package — it contains a really important document that will change the fate and future of my children. Let’s open it,” she said.

“This is a letter from the UK Home Office confirming that my second child has been accepted as a British citizen,” she continued.

She then stated that she would endeavour to secure foreign citizenship for her children.

“I know the world seems unfair, but only I should be an Indonesian citizen — not my children. We’ll make sure the children have strong foreign passports,” she said.
