Low Awareness of Waste Sorting Hinders Waste Management in Klungkung
Awareness among residents in Klungkung, Bali, regarding waste sorting remains very low. In addition to limited facilities and infrastructure, the low awareness of residents in sorting waste is one of the obstacles in addressing the accumulation of rubbish at Gumi Serombotan.
“Only around 30% of residents sort their waste. This is still very low,” said the Head of the Environment and Land Agency (DLHP) of Klungkung, I Dewa Komang Aswin, to detikBali on Monday (13/4/2026).
The problem of mixed waste is also frequently complained about by sorting staff at the Local Waste Processing Site (TOSS) Center Gema Santi, Klungkung. The amount of waste that needs to be sorted is even increasing every year.
“We still find a lot of organic waste mixed with plastic, plastic mixed with residue. If sorted, it would greatly facilitate the processing process,” explained Aswin.
Aswin has sent a circular letter to village and sub-district governments to address the issue. Aswin will also gather various related parties in the near future to jointly intensify waste sorting before disposal.
“So that we all move together because this problem cannot be shouldered by DLHP alone; we must do it together,” clarified Aswin.
The Regent of Klungkung, I Made Satria, explained that residents’ awareness of sorting from home is very important.
“Don’t underestimate it because rubbish has become a boomerang for us in Bali, especially in Klungkung Regency, which is a world tourism destination,” stressed Satria.
