Love of the sea

Love of the sea

From Sinar Pagi

The Central Board of PELMI (Indonesian Young Seamen) asked the House of Representatives to propose to the Government an establishment of a sea institution, in which we can inculcate a true love of sea.

Binsar Effendi Hutabarat, PELMI'S chairman, said that the proposal was made in connection with implementation of the Sea Law Convention of the United Nations (1982) which was put into force on Nov. 16, 1994 and the transformation of the national economic structure into the era of market liberalization.

In this context, according to the chairman, the development of the Indonesian sea sector, which is three times the size of the land, should be managed by one special agent, as stipulated in the GBHN 1993 (outlines of the state policy).

According to the founder of the Foundation of Development of the Indonesian Sea , Didin Burhanuddin, dissemination of the love for the sea should be done in order that the younger generation could anticipate the dependence of the Indonesian nation on the assets of sea in the 21st century. Since Indonesia is a maritime country, the people should be able to benefit from the sea's resources. Therefore the interest in and love of the sea among the younger generation should be enhanced.
