Police have disclosed that the attempted kidnapping of an elderly man, identified by the initials GH (70), in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area of Penjaringan, North Jakarta, was motivated by a romantic affair. Information gathered indicates that one of the perpetrators had previously been in a relationship with a member of the victim’s family, but the union was not blessed. “From the preliminary investigation, the incident is suspected to have been motivated by a personal or romantic issue that was not approved,” said Polda Metro Jaya Head of Public Relations, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, to reporters on Monday (15/6).

Police have arrested two perpetrators in this case, identified by the initials CW (31) and FAP (26). Both have now been named as suspects. “Currently, both have been detained and are undergoing further investigation at the Penjaringan Metro Police Sector,” Budi stated. For their actions, the two suspects are charged under Article 450 and/or Article 471 of the Criminal Code concerning kidnapping and/or assault, with a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison.

In this case, police have also secured a number of pieces of evidence, including a white Toyota Fortuner, CCTV footage, mobile phones, a screwdriver, and the clothing worn by the suspects during the incident. Previously, the elderly man GH was nearly a victim of kidnapping by a group of people while doing his morning exercise in the PIK area, Penjaringan, North Jakarta. Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Penjaringan Metro Police Sector, AKP Sampson Sosa Hutapea, explained that the kidnapping attempt occurred in May 2026 at around 6:55 a.m. Western Indonesian Time. The act was captured by several CCTV cameras in the vicinity.

From the initial investigation and CCTV footage, the suspected perpetrators used a car and followed the victim as he was walking near his residence. Shortly after, a man got out of the vehicle and directly approached the victim. The perpetrator then tried to force the victim into the car, but the victim resisted and escaped the kidnapping attempt. Sampson stated that the victim and the perpetrator wrestled and fell onto the road. He said the victim continued to fight back and screamed for help. It is suspected that the victim’s screams caused the perpetrator to panic. The perpetrator ultimately ceased his actions and chose to flee the scene before successfully taking the victim. Furthermore, Sampson noted that the victim is a private sector employee and has never had any issues with other parties. Additionally, the victim also claimed not to recognise the perpetrator who tried to kidnap him.
