Loud Firecrackers During Maulid Celebration Disturb Jakarta Residents
The loud noise of firecrackers during a Maulid Nabi celebration in the Pondok Pinang area, Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, has caused significant public disturbance. The activity, which featured continuous firecrackers in the sky until the early hours of Saturday (3/10), disrupted the sleep of local residents.
A resident, Amanda Andono, who protested the noise, reportedly faced intimidation and threats of violence from a group of participants. The police have since mediated between the two parties. Meanwhile, the local sub-district head (Lurah) stated that the event did not possess the required permits.
Amanda Andono explained that the event, a large family reunion, lasted from the morning until midnight. She described the organisers’ attitude as arrogant, noting that some residents were shouted at when attempting to lodge protests. Despite mediation efforts by the local neighbourhood heads (RW), the organisers were initially absent from the first meeting.
In a viral video, Amanda, who was protesting the late-night noise, highlighted that her child, who has special needs, was woken up and suffered tremors due to the intense noise. During the protest, she also alleged that she was threatened with physical violence by one of the participants.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has also commented on the incident, stating that using firecrackers late at night is inappropriate, especially when it affects sensitive residents. “Regardless, it is not proper to be setting off firecrackers as late as 1:00 am,” Pramono said when met in South Jakarta on Monday (5/10).
The Head of Pondok Pinang Sub-district, Dina Roslina, confirmed that the committee for the Maulid Nabi and family memorial event did not have official police permits. While the organisers claimed to have coordinated with local neighbourhood leaders (RT/RW) and local security officials, the formal permit process was not completed.
During a mediation session held at the sub-district office, the committee expressed regret for their actions and apologised to the affected residents. The local authorities are encouraging a persuasive resolution and have urged the committee to approach the residents directly.
The Head of Kebayoran Lama District, Mustopa, noted that the event was held without notifying or inviting local government officials. He stated that the district office plans to invite the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI) and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to discuss how to ensure future religious activities are conducted with respect for the local community and in compliance with administrative and permit regulations.
