Lorry Stuck in Matraman Due to Driver Using Mobile Phone, Pramono Demands Tough Action

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has demanded that the driver of a lorry who was allegedly using a mobile phone when crashing into a pedestrian bridge in Matraman, East Jakarta, be dealt with firmly. He requested that the driver’s licence be revoked if proven negligent.

The statement was made by Pramono in response to the frequent incidents of heavy vehicles crashing into public facilities in Jakarta. According to him, law enforcement must be carried out to prevent similar occurrences.

“Regarding yesterday’s incident, which was the same because the driver was using a mobile phone, I have asked the Transportation Agency to coordinate with the Head of the Traffic Police Corps. Whoever does this must be dealt with as severely as possible,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Friday (17/7/2026).

Pramono believes strict sanctions need to be imposed on drivers who disregard safety while driving. He even requested that driving licences or permits be revoked if necessary.

“If necessary, their licence or permit should be revoked,” he stressed.

According to Pramono, responsibility does not rest solely with the driver. Transport companies must also receive warnings if they fail to ensure their drivers obey the rules and drive safely.

“If the company continues to do the same thing, then the company will receive a reprimand for not preparing a driver who is orderly and so on,” he said.

Pramono asserted that incidents of heavy vehicles damaging public facilities must not be repeated because they impact public activities.

“Because Jakarta must not be disrupted by things like that,” he continued.

Previously, a concrete mixer lorry became stuck under a bridge integrated with a railway crossing on Jalan Matraman Raya, East Jakarta, on Thursday (16/7).
