Lorry Driver Admits to Focusing on Maps App Before Striking Tendean Footbridge

A pedestrian footbridge (JPO) on Jalan Kapten Tendean, South Jakarta, nearly collapsed after being struck by a lorry transporting heavy equipment, specifically a crane. The lorry driver, identified as 28-year-old Andre, admitted he was focusing on a maps application when the collision occurred. “We were about two kilometres away from the destination. I was focused on looking at Maps,” Andre said when met at the scene on Tuesday (14/7/2026). Andre stated it was his first time passing the Tendean footbridge and he was unfamiliar with the road conditions. “It was my first time passing there, I didn’t know about it before,” he said. Andre explained he was driving from the Summarecon area in Bogor and was heading towards the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung). The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported the incident occurred at 12:30 a.m. local time, attributing the accident to the driver’s carelessness. “The driver of the heavy equipment towing vehicle did not account for the maximum height of the load,” BPBD Jakarta stated. Observations at the scene at 7:30 a.m. showed one support pillar of the footbridge had been severed from its base. The bridge stairs on the side of Jalan Tendean heading towards Blok M were also separated from the connecting bridge. The lorry that struck the bridge remained at the scene, still lodged under the structure. The damaged footbridge caused traffic congestion from the Pancoran flyover towards Blok M, with traffic only able to flow smoothly after passing the bridge.
