Looter killed as police open fire

GROBOGAN, Central Java: One died and three others were injured when police opened fire to stop timber looters in a forest in Panadaran village, Grobogan district, on Sunday night.

Supardi, 27, died after being shot in the chest, while Sukimin, 30, Tejo Sudir, 35 and Tarto, 40, all were shot in the legs.

As of Monday morning, the scene of the incident was still kept under tight security by police and local officials.

About 100 people tried to loot hardwood trees from the forest, and police fired warning shots to disperse the crowds, an officer from Grobogan police precinct said.

The officer said police were forced to shoot the looters after they attacked officials.(har/edt)
