Long Queues at Ketapang-Gilimanuk: Ministry of Transportation Plans Total Overhaul

JAKARTA — Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi has emphasised that the severe congestion on the Ketapang-Gilimanuk crossing route during Eid al-Fitr 2026 serves as crucial evaluation material for future enhancements.

Dudy stated that the government has identified several factors requiring attention, from policy consistency to the readiness of supporting infrastructure.

“Of course, that will serve as evaluation material for future implementation,” Dudy said at the closing of the Eid al-Fitr 2026 Central Transportation Post, on Monday (30/3/2026).

Additionally, the government will prepare adequate buffer zones or parking pockets to regulate vehicle flow before entering the port.

“We have already mapped out several aspects, such as the consistency in implementing the Joint Decree, and preparing adequate buffer zones to manage the flow of vehicles entering the port,” he explained.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Transportation is considering adjustments to the capacity of ships operating on that route to reduce long queues.

According to him, these various measures are expected to improve the quality of crossing services during the next homecoming season.

Dudy also revealed that overall public mobility during Eid al-Fitr 2026 was quite high.

Based on data, the number of people travelling reached 147.55 million, an increase of 2.53 per cent compared to the previous survey of 143.92 million people.

The increase occurred across all modes of transportation.

Road transport served 3.89 million passengers, up 11.64 per cent; sea transport 2.02 million passengers, up 9.86 per cent; and air transport 4.77 million passengers, increasing by 6.97 per cent.

Meanwhile, rail recorded 7.31 million passengers, up 10.13 per cent, and ferry crossings had the highest growth with 5.52 million passengers, an increase of 15.36 per cent.
