Locals take money to stop blockade

BEKASI: Residents of three subdistricts near the Bantar Gebang dump in Bekasi agreed on Friday to stop blocking the entrance to the dump following the Bekasi administration's decision to pay them Rp 100,000 (US$11.6) each.

They also agreed that the compensation would be channeled through a community fund manager under the supervision of the city development agency.

The residents had previously demanded that the administration compensate them to the tune of Rp 150,000 for three months after Bekasi agreed to extend the use of Bantar Gebang as a dump for Jakarta's 6,000 tons of daily garbage. -- JP
