TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The gradual restoration of Jakarta’s electric commuter rail (KRL) schedule has come as a relief to Sekar Maharani. The woman, who lives in Citayam, Depok, West Java, relies on the Bogor-Jakarta Kota route of the KRL Commuter Line to get to work every day. When the number of trains on the route was reduced in September 2026, Sekar and millions of other passengers were deeply concerned. “I’m still worried that my commute will be disrupted,” she said on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

Starting Monday, September 7, 2026, Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KAI Commuter), the operator of the KRL Commuter Line, canceled 17 services on the Bogor-Jakarta Kota route. The decision followed the withdrawal of seven trainsets manufactured by state-owned Industri Kereta Api (INKA) for maintenance. The move came three days after KRL train No. 1203, traveling from Bogor to Jakarta Kota, derailed as it approached Manggarai Station in South Jakarta.

The cancellations affected seven morning services from Bogor to Manggarai or Jakarta Kota, five from Jakarta Kota to Bogor, two from Manggarai to Bogor, and three afternoon services departing Bogor, including the one Sekar usually takes. The number of daily KRL services across Greater Jakarta consequently fell from 1,065 to 1,048.

Three days later, the schedule changed again when KAI Commuter added 13 services on the Bogor line, bringing the daily total to 1,061 trips. But the additional services were not the result of repairs to the damaged trains. Instead, they were made possible by reallocating trains from the Tanjung Priok line. To compensate, KAI Commuter temporarily deployed Soekarno-Hatta Airport Commuter Line trainsets to serve the Tanjung Priok route.
