Local lifters break 14 national records in tryouts

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's Southeast Asian (SEA) Games
weightlifters broke 14 national records during tryouts at Sports
Hall B of the Bung Karno Sports Complex in Senayan, Central
Jakarta, on Saturday.

"The achievement, however, cannot be acknowledged as new
records since it was not an official event," said referee Warsito
of the Indonesian Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Bodybuilding
Association (PABBSI).

"The lifters must have also undergone doping tests to declare
their achievement new records. But still they have exceeded the
old records."

Eight men and five women lifters have joined the SEA Games
training program. PABBSI is expecting to bring home five of 12
golds at stake during the Sept. 8 to Sept. 17 Games in Kuala
Lumpur.

Gustar of Lampung, competing in the 62-kilogram weight class,
lifted 128 kg in snatch. He managed to lift 147.5 kg in clean and
jerk to top the division with a total of 262.5 kg.

In the 77-kg weight class, Erwin Abdullah of South Sulawesi
lifted 143 kg in snatch, improving his own national record of
142.5 kg. He also improved on his clean and jerk lift of 185.0 kg
to 185.5 kg.

Erwin also broke the total lift record, lifting 1.0 kg more
than his national record of 327.5 kg.

Yudi of South Kalimantan broke three records in the 85-kg
weight class. He lifted 135.5 kg in snatch, 0.5 kg more than the
old record produced made by Feri Ardiantes of Jambi in the 2000
National Games.

In the clean and jerk, Yudi lifted 185.5 kg, improving on an
old record made by Asep Rahman of 175.0 kg. Yudi lifted a total
321 kg, improving his old record of 310 kg.

Tarso of Central Java also made a clean sweep topping the 94
kg weight division. He lifted 140 kg in snatch, exceeding Feri's
old record of 130 kg.

In his clean and jerk lift, Tarso lifted 182.5 kg, improving
his own record of 170.5 kg, which earned him a total lift of 315
kg. The total lift was 15 kg more than his previous national
record.

Joko Hanggono of Bali made himself the fourth SEA Games
trainee lifter to make new records. Joko lifted 141 kg in snatch,
improving the previous record by 0.5 kg.

In the clean and jerk lift, Joko lifted 195 kg, improving his
old record of 190.5 kg. He lifted 6 kg more in the total lift for
336 kg.

In the women's division, lifter Tanti of Central Java topped
the 58-kg class by lifting a total of 192.5 kg. She lifted 112.5
kg in clean and jerk and 80 kg in snatch. Tanti broke Patmawati's
national record of 105 kg in clean and jerk.

PABBSI will evaluate the lifters' achievements at the National
Championships which will take place from July 18 to July 24 in
Denpasar, Bali, before naming the core squad for the Games. (nvn)
