Deputy Minister of Transmigration (Wamentrans) Viva Yoga Mauladi stated that there are currently around 60 proposals for opening new transmigration areas submitted by local governments (pemda). He mentioned that in several regencies outside Java and Bali, there are still alienated areas.

“With the transmigration programme, whether local transmigration (local residents within the regency or province) or general transmigration, it will be occupied by people who then carry out economic, social, and cultural activities, thus leading to growth,” said Viva after handing over 109 land ownership certificates (SHM) to transmigration residents in Pulubala Subdistrict, Gorontalo Regency, on Wednesday (8/4).

To follow up on the proposals for opening new transmigration areas, the Ministry of Transmigration has a special team that will study them in detail, from land status to the development of flagship products. The aim is for the transmigration areas to have a significant impact on regional economic growth, regional economic development, and poverty eradication. Additionally, it provides opportunities for new jobs for communities living in the new transmigration areas.

“So, several local governments have submitted new proposals for their areas to be opened as transmigration zones. The one that has been decided is only one, Sigi Regency (Central Sulawesi),” said Viva.

The requirements for opening new transmigration areas, he continued, are that the local government must prepare a transmigration area plan. Then, the land must be provided by the local government and must be clean and clear.

“In the sense that there are no legal issues, juridical issues, or overlaps that could cause problems in the future. We do not want that,” explained Viva.

In addition, the government also wants to see what potential can be developed as flagship products in the planned transmigration area. “Because once there are transmigrants, they cannot just be left alone; there must be economic activities, social activities, and development of what flagship products can be developed to improve the welfare of the transmigration community,” he clarified.
