Local Government Urges Coastal Communities to Maintain Beach Cleanliness
The Kepulauan Seribu Regency Government is calling on coastal communities to take an active role in maintaining beach cleanliness through a Beach Cleaning Action at the Jembatan Cinta in Pulau Tidung.
“This action aims to increase collective awareness in maintaining environmental cleanliness, particularly in island areas,” said the Head of the Kepulauan Seribu Environmental Agency, Achmad Hariadi, in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The activity was organised to commemorate World Environment Day, which is observed every 5 June. The event carried the theme ‘Standardised Small Island Waste Management’ and included the inauguration of a waste sorting movement in the Pulau Tidung area.
“This is the result of a collaboration with the Centre for Environmental Instrument Standardisation to increase public awareness in maintaining environmental cleanliness, especially in the archipelago region.”
The beach cleaning action was attended by approximately two hundred participants, including representatives from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment, officials from the Kepulauan Seribu Environmental Agency, members of the Saka Kalpataru Scouts, district and sub-district officials, and local residents. Participants combed the coastal areas of Pantai Jembatan Cinta to collect waste, which was then sorted into organic and inorganic categories.
“Organic waste can be processed into fertiliser, while plastic waste can be recycled into various handicraft products,” Achmad added.
Meanwhile, the Head of South Kepulauan Seribu District, Muhammad Nur, noted that the intensified waste sorting movement aligns with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government’s policy regarding waste management at the source.
