Local Government Performance Delivers Decent Housing for Low-Income Communities
The dream of owning a permanent home is often a heavy challenge for low-income citizens. Local governments must demonstrate a commitment to supporting these vulnerable populations.
Local authorities must be able to cut bureaucratic hurdles and provide ease of licensing for the construction of subsidised housing. Furthermore, regional governments must provide easier access to land and fiscal incentives, ensuring that market house prices remain within the purchasing power of low-income communities.
Beyond focusing on the construction of new housing units through partnerships with developers and banks, local governments are also actively promoting programmes to improve the quality of self-help housing for residents in rural areas and densely populated settlements.
In this context, the 2026 Batch II Regional Sulawesi Outstanding Local Government Awards were held to recognise regions deemed capable of helping citizens obtain decent housing. These regions were included in the awards under the ‘3 Million Houses Programme Implementation’ category.
This category assesses the commitment and performance of local governments in supporting the implementation of the 3 Million Houses Programme by providing decent housing for the community. The assessment covers regional policy support, the acceleration of housing provision, and the sustainable management of settlement development. Regional innovation serves as an added value in presenting collaborative and impactful housing solutions.
The 2026 Batch II Regional Sulawesi Outstanding Local Government Awards continue a series of appreciations previously held in various regions of Indonesia. Following the Sumatra Region in Batam, the Java and Bali Region in Bali, and the Kalimantan Region in Balikpapan, the series proceeded to the Sulawesi Region.
Several local governments in Sulawesi received spotlight for the programmes and innovations they have implemented, including environmental management, improved access to health and education services, and the provision of decent housing for the community.
The 2026 Batch II Regional Sulawesi Outstanding Local Government Awards took place on Friday, 10 September 2026, at 19:00 WITA. The event was broadcast via live stream on detikcom and detikSulsel.
