Local Egg Production Meets Sorong Raya's Needs, Says Livestock Agency
The Livestock and Animal Health Agency of Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua, has stated that egg production from local farmers is capable of meeting the needs of the community in the Sorong Raya region, including supporting supply for the Free Nutritious Meal Programme (MBG).
Head of the Sorong Regency Livestock and Animal Health Agency, Margariet Beatriks Hendrika Nauw, said in Aimas on Thursday that Sorong Regency has achieved self-sufficiency in eggs, supported by the presence of several laying hen farms, particularly in the Yeflio area.
“We are already self-sufficient in eggs. Production from farms in Yeflio is able to meet the needs of the community in Sorong Raya,” she said.
She explained that one laying hen company in Yeflio is capable of producing around 700 bundles of eggs per day, which are marketed through several outlets in Sorong Raya. “Additionally, there are small-scale farmers who also help sustain the availability of eggs in the market,” she clarified.
According to her, local egg production also supplies the Free Nutritious Meal Programme (MBG) and serves requests from several areas around Sorong Regency.
Margariet said that based on the local government’s monitoring, the egg supply in Sorong Regency remains in a safe condition with relatively stable prices, although price differences exist based on the quality or size of the eggs. “Egg prices are still stable. Price differences are influenced by the quality of the eggs sold in the market,” she stated.
She added that besides the production centre in Yeflio, there are several independent laying hen farmers spread across several areas, including Mariat District, who also support the availability of eggs in Sorong Regency. According to her, these laying hen farming businesses are mostly developed independently by the community, while the local government plays a role in providing guidance, monitoring, and supervision of the livestock sector’s development to ensure it can meet the community’s food needs sustainably.
