Local boys bounced out of tennis tournament

JAKARTA (JP): Local boys failed to advance to the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Gas Negara International Junior Championship at Kemayoran Tennis Center in Central Jakarta, but three girls made it through to the last eight.

Indonesian Ferza Gauthama lost to Jason Pieters of South Africa 0-6, 4-6 in the second round on Wednesday. Another Indonesian, Henry Davinteja, lost to qualifier Gunter Austerhuber of Austria 2-6, 6-7.

Pieters will face Wang Yeu-tzuoo of Chinese Taipei who beat Markus Egger of Austria 6-1, 6-2. Austerhuber will meet Lukasz Kubot of Poland, who defeated Christopher Westerhof of South Africa 7-5, 6-2.

In another quarterfinal match, Thailand's Sonchai Ratiwatana will play Izak Van der Merwe of South Africa. Ratiwatana upset South African Robert Blair 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 and Van der Merwe beat Austrian Viktor Libal 6-4, 6-4.

In another match, Marco Mirnegg of Austria plays Clinton Jacobs of South Africa. Mirnegg outclassed compatriot Ernst Khyo 6-4, 6-4 and Jacobs overcame Thailand's Sonchat Ratiwatana 6-3, 6-2.

The Indonesian girls fared better, with Angelique Widjaja, Dea Sumantri and Novianti Warsono coming through with little trouble.

Angelique overpowered Japan's Tomoko Yonemura 6-1, 6-1 and Dea trounced compatriot Rosa Maya without losing a game. Angelique will meet Novianti, who beat Nida Waseem of Pakistan 6-4, 6-2.

Dea will meet Maretha Van Niekerk of the Netherlands, who beat another Indonesian Sandy Gumulya 6-3, 6-2.

Masayo Hosokawa of Japan brushed aside Indonesian Ida Sutedja 6-4, 6-1 to set up her quarterfinal with Constanze Steiner of Austria. Steiner survived two close sets against Indonesian Dian Anggraini 6-4, 6-4.

Top seeded Kumiko Iijima of Japan was untroubled against Mudarwati 6-3, 6-0. Iijima will square off against Wilawan Choptang, who recouped from the loss of the first set to win against Inge Weirich of South Africa, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Angelique, paired with Dea, reached the semifinals of the girls' doubles by beating Japan's Akiko Yonemura and Mari Inoue 6-2, 6-0. The Indonesian will face Thailand's Pichaya Laosirichon and Choptang, who proved too tough for Indonesians Anggraini and Linda Arumsari 6-1, 6-0.

In the boys' doubles, Indonesians Al Imron and Eko Putra made the last four by eking out a third-set win over Robert Kotroczo of Rumania and Rishan Kuruppu of Canada 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Imron and Putra will play Prakash Amritraj of the United States and Wang, who upset Frederik Aarum of Norway and Morten Schultz of Denmark 6-4, 6-2. (ivy)
