National Student League for Democracy (LMND) has stated that President Prabowo Subianto’s reaffirmation of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution aligns with the spirit of economic sovereignty and strengthening national sovereignty. LMND Chairman Isnain Mukadar, in Jakarta on Sunday, said the reaffirmation presents an opportunity to realign national development with an economy centred on the people’s interests. ‘The President’s speech reaffirming Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution is a crucial step to strengthen the national economic direction in favour of the people,’ he said. He expressed support for the national economic policy direction outlined by the President in a recent speech to the House of Representatives. Isnain, also known as Wale, stated that these directives must be implemented through policies that reduce social inequality and strengthen state control over strategic sectors. He noted Indonesia still faces issues of land ownership inequality, national wealth leakage, and weak state control over key strategic sectors. LMND also highlighted economic practices that disproportionately benefit a small group of capital owners through control of natural resources and national strategic assets. ‘Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution must form the foundation for building a fair national economy and ensuring the benefits of development are widely shared by the people,’ he added. LMND supports government efforts to strengthen natural resource governance, industrial downstreaming, strategic commodity export oversight, and the eradication of mining and land mafias. However, LMND stressed that economic policies must prioritise farmers, fishermen, workers, indigenous communities, and urban poor populations. LMND hopes Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution will be consistently applied in national economic policies to reduce inequality and economic dominance that harms the people. Additionally, LMND called for land reform, an end to the criminalisation of farmers and indigenous communities, and strengthened state control over strategic resources. ‘LMND urged citizens to actively participate in implementing the mandate of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution to maximise national wealth for the people’s prosperity,’ said Wale.
