Lippo Malls Indonesia (LMI) is expanding its use of renewable energy with the operation of a rooftop solar power plant (PLTS) at Sun Plaza in Medan. The initiative is projected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 729 tonnes of CO2 per year while strengthening the implementation of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles across its shopping centre network.

Sun Plaza becomes the fifth mall in the Lippo Malls Indonesia network to utilise solar energy, following Lippo Mall Cikarang, Lippo Plaza Kramat Jati, Lippo Plaza Batu, and Lippo Plaza Kendari. Throughout 2026, the company has allocated an investment equivalent to approximately Rp11.6 billion for the construction of rooftop solar power systems at Sun Plaza and Lippo Plaza Kendari.

The rooftop solar system at Sun Plaza has the potential to generate up to 810 MWh of renewable energy per year, equivalent to around 2.5 percent of the mall’s annual electricity needs. The system is also projected to yield energy cost efficiencies of approximately Rp130 million per year. Beyond reducing conventional electricity consumption, the solar panels at Sun Plaza are expected to cut carbon emissions by 640 to 729 tonnes annually, an amount equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of roughly 29,000 to 33,000 trees.

LMI Chief Marketing Officer Santiwati Basuki stated that the adoption of rooftop solar panels is part of the company’s strategy to integrate ESG principles into its business operations. “The implementation of solar panels at Sun Plaza and Lippo Plaza Kendari this year demonstrates Lippo Malls Indonesia’s real commitment to integrating ESG principles into our business operations. We view sustainability not only as a corporate responsibility but also as a strategic investment that can enhance operational efficiency, strengthen asset competitiveness, and bolster the trust of customers, business partners, and the community in Lippo Malls Indonesia,” she said in a press release on Monday.

In addition to Sun Plaza, LMI has also completed the construction of a rooftop solar power plant at Lippo Plaza Kendari with an equivalent investment value of approximately Rp5.2 billion. Both projects are part of the company’s roadmap to expand the use of clean energy across its entire shopping centre portfolio. Santiwati added that LMI will continue to evaluate opportunities for implementing renewable energy technologies across various assets to support long-term carbon emission reduction targets. The implementation of rooftop solar panels at Sun Plaza also strengthens Medan’s position as a city that is beginning to adopt sustainable building practices.
