LLDIKTI V Forms State-Private University Consortium to Accelerate Regional Development

The Higher Education Service Institution (LLDIKTI) for Region V Yogyakarta has initiated the formation of a specialised expertise consortium that combines the significant potential of state and private universities to optimise the tangible contribution of academics in accelerating regional development. The formation of the consortium refers directly to the directive of the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology to synergise all strategic potential possessed by higher education communities in each region, said Head of LLDIKTI Region V Prof Setyabudi Indartono in Yogyakarta on Tuesday. According to him, the institution plans to select five state universities and ten private universities with ‘Unggul’ accreditation in Yogyakarta to become the driving force for each consortium to be formed. This consortium will later be directly connected with the Regional Development Planning Agency and district/city governments to formulate concrete solutions for various strategic regional issues, he said. The plan to strengthen this cross-campus consortium is scheduled to be a main agenda item at the upcoming annual Yogyakarta Science and Technology Symposium (SSTY) 2026, which will bring together scientists, regional government officials, and the industrial sector. Prof Setyabudi Indartono stated that the SSTY adopts the concept of the national-level Industrial Science and Technology Convention to combine the potential of higher education with the real needs of regional development and the business world. Professors and doctoral degree holders across campuses in Yogyakarta have first conducted ‘problem shopping’ directly from regional governments to formulate more actual and contextual research proposals. The SSTY 2025 was attended by approximately 1,200 professors and doctoral degree holders, he said. In addition to encouraging research commercialisation, he added, LLDIKTI V continues to spur continuous improvement in institutional quality, considering that the Special Region of Yogyakarta has successfully recorded the highest percentage of ‘Unggul’-accredited private higher education institutions in Indonesia, reaching 10 percent of total institutions.
