Livestock Farmers in Klungkung Reveal Difficulties Selling Cattle Ahead of Eid al-Adha
The Integrated Farming System Group (Simantri) Satya Sujati in Gelgel Village, Klungkung, Bali, is currently struggling to sell its livestock cattle ahead of Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijriah/2026 CE. Unlike previous Eid al-Adha celebrations, demand for cattle this year feels quite subdued, resulting in a decline in selling prices.
The Chairman of the Simantri Satya Sujati Group, I Ketut Sudarsa (58), revealed that demand for cattle seedlings from farmers this year is almost non-existent. If there is any, the purchase prices requested are very low.
“In previous Eid al-Adha, many farmers came here to buy seedlings at high prices. That showed that the cattle we raised sold well at good prices. Now it’s hard to sell, consequently the selling prices have also dropped,” Sudarsa complained when met by detikBali at the group’s cattle breeding pens on Thursday (7/5/2026).
This kind of situation has actually been occurring for several years prior. He is sceptical when many say that cattle selling prices rise ahead of Eid al-Adha. Because, evidently, farmers are reluctant to buy seedlings or calves.
“If they sold well, we shouldn’t have trouble selling them here. I’m here managing for many farmers, they all complain, and are even starting to get lazy to tend to their cattle,” Sudarsa explained.
“Previously, six-month-old calves were priced at Rp 8 to Rp 9 million, now Rp 4 to Rp 5 million. I don’t know, but this is due to the many cattle entering Bali. The government does not prioritise local cattle. I don’t know, this might be a game by those at the top,” Sudarsa clarified.
According to Sudarsa, the difficulty in selling livestock is increasingly felt ahead of Eid al-Adha. Whereas in the past, almost every year ahead of the sacrificial animal holiday for Muslims, all farmers reaped profits.
“In the past, we dared to borrow from the bank to buy seedlings, now who dares. If calculated for feed costs, it ends up in continuous losses,” Sudarsa added.
In contrast to Sudarsa, the Chairman of the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) Kampung Gelgel, Mashuri, stated that cattle raised from assistance under one of the central government programmes have experienced price increases ahead of Eid al-Adha. According to him, the increase has occurred after Eid al-Fitr.
“The cattle price increase we monitored has happened post-Eid al-Fitr. Before fasting, compared to after fasting, the increase is quite significant up to now. From Rp 10 to Rp 12.5 million, now for the calves it’s already Rp 14 million,” Mashuri explained.
Nevertheless, Mashuri does not know for certain the extent of the price increase range in the market. Because BUMDes Kampung Gelgel is only running the cattle farming business this year.
