Live Streaming Platforms Expand Role in Global Creator Economy
Live streaming platforms are increasingly expanding their role in driving the growth of the global creator economy. No longer just a space for digital entertainment, community-based platforms are now utilised to open new career opportunities, strengthen cross-country connections, and introduce local cultures to international audiences.
Amid this development, the live streaming platform Bigo Live is celebrating a decade of building a global creator community since its launch in 2016.
Over the past 10 years, the platform has grown to around 700 million users spread across more than 150 countries. Indonesia is cited as one of the main markets in the company’s digital ecosystem.
A spokesperson for Bigo Live Indonesia stated that the Indonesian creator community has made a significant contribution to the platform’s development over the past decade.
“Indonesia has an extraordinary talent community and has played a major role in shaping Bigo Live’s journey over the past ten years,” they said, quoted from a written statement received on Monday (11/5).
According to them, since the beginning, the company has strived to provide a global stage that encourages authenticity and diversity among creators from various countries.
“From highlighting local cultural heritage like batik to seeing Indonesian creators leading in global rankings, we are proud to provide a space for Indonesian creators’ voices to reach the world and create a positive impact in today’s creator economy,” they added.
Bigo Live assesses that the prospects for the global creator economy remain very promising. Referring to a Grand View Research report, the value of the global creator economy is projected to reach US$1.345 trillion or approximately Rp23,156 trillion by 2033.
Over the past decade, the platform has also developed a digital space that is claimed to be safe and innovative, while opening opportunities for users to build connections and new careers through virtual interactions.
The 10th anniversary celebration of Bigo Live was held from 3 to 15 April 2026 through various competitions within the app and community activities involving hosts, families, and users from various countries.
Indonesian creators have also recorded achievements at the global level. In the Top Indonesian Families category, the Inferno community ranked 11th globally, while Libra ranked 14th.
Meanwhile, Indonesian creator Lilypoo secured first place in the Intercontinental Championship Beauty Track category. Creator Krystal with BIGO ID chanel30 also succeeded in becoming the national champion in the Miss Bigo 2026 Indonesia online competition.
The Miss Bigo 2026 event was concluded through an offline gala in Ho Chi Minh City, featuring creators from 14 countries. The event carried the theme ‘Embrace Different’, which highlights the diversity of stories and experiences as the strength of the global community.
In addition, Bigo Live presents various community programmes such as the singing talent competition ‘BIGO The Four! Battle for Glory’ as well as the BIGO Awards Gala as a form of appreciation for creators and agencies deemed to have contributed to building an active and supportive digital community.
