The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag), is officially holding the Isbat Session to determine 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah or Eid al-Fitr 2026 today, Thursday (19/3/2026). The session, taking place at the Auditorium HM Rasjidi in Jakarta, will decide whether Eid 2026 falls on Friday, 20 March, or Saturday, 21 March 2026.
The Isbat Session is a formal mechanism used by the Indonesian government to establish the beginning of months in the Hijriah calendar. The term “Isbat” means determination or confirmation. In the process, Kemenag uses the Hisab method to mathematically calculate the moon’s position and Rukyatul Hilal to verify that position through field observations.
In determining the results of the Eid al-Fitr 2026 Isbat Session, the government refers to the crescent visibility criteria agreed upon by the Ministers of Religious Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS). The main requirement for a valid crescent is a minimum elevation of 3 degrees with a minimum elongation angle of 6.4 degrees. If the crescent’s position is below those figures, the month of Ramadan will be completed to 30 days (istikmal).
The Ministry of Religious Affairs has established 117 hilal observation points spread across 38 provinces. The Kanwil Kemenag for the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) states that monitoring of the hilal for determining 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah is centred in Bantul. The Ministry of Religious Affairs will hold the Isbat session this afternoon.
BMKG and BRIN predict that Eid al-Fitr 1 Syawal 1447 H will fall on Saturday, 21 March 2026, because the hilal does not meet the MABIMS criteria. See the details.
