Live bomb found in Palembang

PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: A home-made bomb wrapped in a black plastic bag was found at the Raden Fattah Islamic Teaching Institute in the South Sumatra provincial capital of Palembang on Monday.

The explosive device was found by Suyadi, the institute's security guard, when he was patrolling the campus on Monday night.

According to Suyadi, the bomb was placed on the Adab faculty's gate by an unidentified man.

"When I walked around the Adab faculty at midnight, I saw a strange object in a black plastic bag. When I tried to open it, I found cables. Then I was aware that it was a bomb and I immediately threw it into the field before reporting it to the nearby police station, he said.

South Sumatra Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. M. Sulaiman confirmed that the police had examined the bomb in the forensics laboratory.

"The bomb would only create a small explosion," he said, adding that police are searching for those who put it in the campus. --JP
