Littering in Tabanan Now Carries Criminal Penalties
The Tabanan Regency Government (Pemkab) has begun implementing sanctions for waste management violators starting on Wednesday (13/5/2026). The sanctions range from verbal warnings, written reprimands, to light criminal offences (tipiring).
The Head of the Waste Management Acceleration Task Force, who is also the Tabanan Regency Secretary, I Gede Susila, stated that sanctions will be imposed on the public who continue to litter or fail to follow waste management protocols.
Nevertheless, Susila emphasised that the implementation of sanctions will be accompanied by education and guidance for the community.
“While proceeding, we will continue to provide education. However, if violations are found, sanctions will certainly be applied,” said Gede Susila.
In addition to targeting the public, the sanctions will also apply to business operators, from hotels, restaurants, to cafes. For business operators who do not adhere to waste management regulations, administrative sanctions may impact the licensing process.
“So the task force through the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) will record various forms of violations that occur. Of course, prioritising education and guidance before verbal sanctions, so as not to reach tipiring sanctions,” he said.
Besides administrative sanctions and tipiring, the local government is also promoting social sanctions through customary village bylaws or village regulations.
According to Susila, most customary villages in Tabanan already have rules regarding waste management. Therefore, he hopes that these rules can be optimally implemented in each village.
“Almost all customary villages already have perarem (rules) related to waste. I request that these social sanctions be well implemented in each village,” he concluded.
