Literacy campaigns to be intensified
SURAKARTA, Central Java: The government will be intensifying
literacy campaigns because 5.8 million Indonesians are still
illiterate, a senior official said.
The campaigns will be intensified in all provinces and the
government has allocated huge amounts of funds for this, Director
General for Nonformal Education, Youth and Sports Affairs
Soedjiarto said last Saturday.
The official declined to mention the actual sum made available
for the campaign.
The project is implemented in cooperation with the education
ministry, home affairs ministry, religious affairs ministry and
the Armed Forces headquarters.
"We hope, that in the next five years to come, there will be
no illiterate citizens," he said. (har)
