Listyo Sigit Prabowo: Extended Police Retirement Age Will Not Hinder Careers
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo is confident that the increase in the mandatory retirement age for police officers contained in the revision of the Police Law (UU Polri) will not hinder career advancement. “I think the retirement age limit — though I haven’t read it yet — has been regulated so that issues concerning bottlenecks, concerning a position becoming stuck, have all been addressed,” Sigit said during a press conference at the DPR Building, Jakarta, Tuesday (9/6). The Police Chief stated that the National Police will follow up on the law’s mandate to provide the service expected by the public and to shape an institutional posture that the public can trust. “And most importantly, how the National Police can become more humane, more professional, and more beloved by the public going forward,” he said. The Police Chief emphasised the institution’s commitment to adapting to the challenges and developments of the times, which are feared to give rise to various new problems. Sigit also stressed that efforts to create and maintain public security and order stability are a primary requirement to support the realisation of national development. A plenary session of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Tuesday approved the Draft Law on the Third Amendment to Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the Indonesian National Police to be enacted into law. One of the provisions regulated in the bill is the increase in the retirement age limit for National Police members. Article 30 paragraph (5) letter c stipulates that the retirement age limit for four-star high-ranking officers is a maximum of 60 years. However, this limit can be extended by one year or according to needs as determined by presidential decree. The retirement age limit for National Police members holding the ranks of tamtama and bintara is 59 years, while for first-level officers, middle-level officers, and high-ranking officers it is 60 years. This retirement age limit is exempted for National Police members who hold functional positions, for whom the retirement age limit follows the provisions of legislation for functional officials. National Police members who possess specialised expertise and/or are critically needed for police duties may have their retirement age limit extended by a maximum of two years at the proposal of the National Police Chief or according to needs as determined by presidential decree.
