List of Toll Roads Equipped with Emergency Escape Lanes for Vehicles with Brake Failure

Emergency escape lanes (Jalur Penyelamat Darurat, JPD) are safety facilities installed on several toll road sections. Safety Training Director of Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI), Sony Susmana, said these lanes can be used by large vehicles such as trucks or buses when they experience brake problems. ‘The way is simply to steer the vehicle in distress into that lane. And vehicles entering the escape lane will slow to a stop as they are designed to be trapped by a sand-filled bed,’ Sony told Kompas.com recently. It is designed to create high friction so that the vehicle’s speed can be reduced gradually until it finally stops. In addition, the position of JPD is usually on the left-hand side of the road, with dimensions of about 6 metres in height, 20 metres in length and 3 metres in width.
