Bank Indonesia (BI) has officially withdrawn and removed several Rupiah denominations from circulation, meaning they are no longer valid as legal tender. Owners of these old denominations are advised to immediately exchange them at central bank offices before the established deadlines expire. Any exchanges attempted after the deadline will result in the money becoming void and non-exchangeable for new emissions. This withdrawal process is conducted periodically by BI to maintain the quality of circulating currency and to adapt to advancements in security technology for both paper and metal banknotes.

According to Bank Indonesia regulations, the withdrawal of Rupiah is performed periodically to ensure currency quality and anticipate developments in security features. The following denominations are approaching their exchange deadlines or require public attention:

  • Old Emission Paper Money: Certain denominations withdrawn from circulation are typically granted a grace period for exchange of up as much as 10 years from the withdrawal date.

  • Special Coin Denominations: BI has also periodically withdrawn special Rupiah coins (URK) that were previously issued for specific commemorative moments.

Exchange Procedures and Requirements

If you find these old denominations in your wallet, piggy bank, or safe, do not panic. Exchanges can still be carried out through the following steps:

  1. Visit a Bank Indonesia Office: Exchanges can be conducted at the BI Head Office or representative offices throughout Indonesia.

  2. Condition of the Money: Ensure the physical condition of the money still allows its authenticity features to be recognised. Severely damaged or water-damaged money that is completely destroyed risks being rejected.

  3. Bring Identification: Remember to bring your ID card (KTP) or other official identification as part of standard banking procedures.

Exchange Provisions

For metal Rupiah, if the physical size is greater than 1/2 of its original size and the authenticity features are recognisable, replacement will be provided at the nominal value of the exchanged Rupiah. However, if the physical size is equal to or less than 1/2 of its original size, no replacement will be provided.
