A number of regions have implemented distance learning (PJJ), or schooling from home, due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait. The distance learning policy was adopted to prevent pupils from being exposed to volcanic ash.

As compiled by detikcom on Monday (7/9/2026), the regions applying distance learning span several provinces. Here is the list:

DKI Jakarta

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has announced the application of distance learning for all schools in Jakarta. The policy applies to both state and private schools, effective from Monday, 7 September 2026, until further notice.

“We want to ensure children can continue learning in a safe and comfortable environment. Therefore, learning will temporarily be conducted from home. Parents need not panic, as the learning process will continue,” said the Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Education Office, Nahdiana, in an official statement from the DKI Provincial Government on Sunday (6/9/2026).

Senior and Vocational High Schools in Banten

The Banten Provincial Government has also issued a circular on the implementation of distance learning for senior high schools (SMA), vocational schools (SMK) and Islamic senior high schools (SKh) due to the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. Distance learning will run for three days, from Monday (7/9) to Wednesday (9/9).

“All state and private education units at the SMA, SMK and SKh levels under the Banten Provincial Education and Culture Office will be temporarily transferred to distance learning (PJJ) or learning from home (BDR) for three days, from Monday to Wednesday, 7 to 9 September 2026,” said the Head of the Banten Education and Culture Office, Jamaluddin, in the circular issued on Sunday (6/9/2026).

For context, decisions regarding senior secondary schools rest with provincial authorities, whereas authority over schools from early childhood education (PAUD) through to junior secondary level (SMP) lies with district and municipal governments.

Serang City

The Serang City Government has announced distance learning for pupils from PAUD, SD through to SMP level. It will be applied for one day, Monday 7 September 2026. The Serang City Government stated that the decision on returning to school will be based on further evaluation.

“The Serang City Education and Culture Office continues to coordinate periodically, seeking technical input from the Serang City Environment Office and the Regional Disaster Management Agency regarding developments in the air quality index (ISPU) and the direction of volcanic ash dispersal, in order to determine subsequent learning policies,” said the Head of the Serang City Education and Culture Office, Ahmad Nuri, on Sunday (6/9/2026).

Cilegon City

The Head of the Cilegon City Education and Culture Office, Heni Anita Susila, said the government had initially planned to hold in-person learning on Monday (7/9). However, the spread of volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau prompted the decision to switch to distance learning.

“It was initially going to be in-person, but given the development of the Anak Krakatau eruption, all education units under the coordination of the Education and Culture Office — kindergartens, PAUD, SD and SMP, both state and private — will implement distance learning starting Monday, 7 September,” said Heni when contacted on Sunday (6/9).

Pandeglang

The Pandeglang Regency Government is also implementing distance learning. It will be carried out for three days.

“Teaching and learning activities will be conducted through distance learning or learning from home, effective from 7 to 9 September 2026,” said the Head of the Pandeglang Education Office, Sutoto, in a written statement.

Bogor Regency

The Bogor Regency Government has implemented distance learning for all schools in its area, in view of the impact of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

“The Governor of West Java has instructed the Bogor Regency Government, and we are implementing a policy on Monday, 7 September 2026 through to 8 September 2026, which we will evaluate further depending on developments,” said Bogor Regent Rudy Susmanto on Monday (7/6).

Depok City

The Depok City Government has also enforced distance learning or learning from home for two days, following the impact of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

“Depok has adopted this learning-from-home policy, distance learning for two days, Monday and Tuesday. It will be evaluated to see how the situation develops; hopefully it will improve,” said the Head of the Depok City Education Office, Wahid Suryono, when contacted by journalists on Sunday (6/9).

He said the announcement applies to PAUD/kindergarten, SD and SMP level education units, both state and private, in Depok City.

Bogor City

The Bogor City Government has implemented a distance learning policy in anticipation of the impact of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau on pupils. Distance learning will be enforced for two days for education units from kindergarten through to SD and SMP level.

“On Monday (7/9), teaching and learning activities for kindergarten, SD and SMP levels will be temporarily moved to home under the distance learning scheme. The safety and health of our children come first,” said the Mayor of Bogor, Dedie A Rachim.

Lampung Province

The Governor of Lampung, Rahmat Mirzani Djausal, has announced that teaching and learning activities will be conducted online from 7 to 8 September 2026, as an anticipatory measure against the impact of volcanic ash.
