Several major roads in Jakarta will experience a one-hour lamp blackout on Saturday (25/4/2026) evening as part of Earth Day commemorations. The blackout is scheduled from 20:30 to 21:30 WIB and will be carried out simultaneously in five regions. Head of the Jakarta Environment Agency, Dudi Gardesi Sadikin, stated that this step aims to encourage energy savings while curbing greenhouse gas emissions. “The lamp blackout activity aims to promote energy savings, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase public awareness and participation in efforts to prevent and control environmental pollution,” Dudi said in a written statement on Friday (24/4/2026). The blackout will not only target roads but also government buildings and commercial structures such as shopping centres, hotels, restaurants, and apartments. However, healthcare facilities like hospitals, community health centres, and clinics are exempted. “All buildings, Jakarta Provincial Government office buildings except hospitals, community health centres, clinics. Some private buildings, commercial buildings, shopping centres, restaurants, hotels, and apartments,” Dudi said. In addition to roads, several Jakarta icons will also be temporarily blacked out, including the National Monument (Monas), Hotel Indonesia Roundabout (HI), Jakarta City Hall Building, Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, Youth Statue, as well as the Heroes Statue and General Sudirman. Similar blackouts are also scheduled for 13 June 2026 (World Environment Day) and 26 September 2026 (World Ozone Day).
