List of Illegal and Dangerous Medicines and Cosmetics, BPOM: Damages Kidneys and Heart
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has released a list of illegal medicine and food products that circulated widely on various marketplaces throughout 2025. The findings show many products containing hazardous chemicals (BKO) that can trigger damage to vital organs such as the kidneys and liver, and even increase the risk of heart attack. BPOM head Taruna Ikrar said the agency conducted intensive cyber patrols and found hundreds of thousands of sale links that did not meet the provisions. He noted that total illegal products identified reached in the millions, originating from both domestic and imported goods from various countries such as China, South Korea, and the United States. ‘Throughout 2025, BPOM conducted cyber patrols on marketplaces and found thousands of accounts and 197,725 links to illegal or non-compliant medicines or foods,’ Taruna said in an official statement, quoted on Saturday (7/3/2026).
According to BPOM data, illegal cosmetics became the commodity with the most finds, reaching nearly 4.6 million products, including brands such as Cream Racikan Farmasi and CAPPUVINI Matte Lip Glaze Dark Series. Some of these illegal cosmetic products were found to contain hydroquinone, a substance prohibited in cosmetics because it can cause skin darkening and changes to cornea and nails.
‘Illegal OBA (Obat Bahan Alam) or medicines containing drug substances (BKO) are the second most common commodity found in online sales, reaching 2 million products from Indonesia and China,’ Taruna continued.
In addition to cosmetics and traditional medicines, the cyber patrol also found health supplements and processed foods that were mixed with hazardous drug substances (BKO) such as tadalafil, sildenafil, and sibutramine. Products such as Soloco Candy, Akiyo Candy, Super Tonik Madu Kuat Alami, and Pinky Pelangsing were confirmed to contain these ingredients, which are prohibited in food and herbal products.
‘Top 10 illegal OBAs include Ramuan China Buah Merah Papua and Zudaifu, which are most commonly sold in Cilacap Regency and West Jakarta Administrative City. Pi Kang Wang and Swiss Paris Lotion are examples of illegal medicines widely sold in Tangerang Regency and Bekasi Regency,’ Taruna explained.
BPOM warns that consuming products adulterated with BKO carries significant risks, including unstable blood pressure, damage to liver and kidney function, and even death.
As a follow-up, BPOM has coordinated with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs and e-commerce associations to block accounts and sale links, with a total preventive economic value of Rp 49.82 trillion.
