Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Indonesia’s annual inflation rate in March 2026 actually declined compared to February 2026. This was despite the month coinciding with a major national religious holiday that typically boosts public consumption, namely Eid al-Fitr or Lebaran.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded an annual inflation rate of 3.48% for March 2026, lower than the previous month’s figure of 4.86%. However, compared to the same month last year, this inflation rate is still much higher, as March 2025 inflation was only 1.03% year-on-year.

“This means there is still an increase in the consumer price index or CPI from 107.22 in March 2025 to 110.95 in March 2026,” said Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, during a press conference at the BPS headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday (1/4/2026).

Referring to BPS data, only three household expenditure groups experienced high inflation pressure in March 2026. The first is the housing, water, electricity, and household fuel group with an inflation rate of 7.24% and a contribution to the CPI of 1.08%.

The second is the personal care and other services expenditure group, with an inflation rate reaching 15.32% and a contribution of only 1.02% to the CPI. The third is food, beverages, and tobacco, with inflation at 3.34% and a contribution of 0.99%.

“For the personal care and other services group that experienced quite high inflation, this mainly occurred in the gold jewellery commodity, this is year-on-year,” said Ateng.

Outside of that commodity, inflation in other household expenditure groups was only below 2%. For example, health inflation was 1.49% with a contribution of 0.05%. Then, food and beverage provision or restaurants at 1.42% with a contribution of 0.14%, and education at 1.14% with a contribution of 0.06%.

Meanwhile, the group that recorded deflation or a price decrease in that month was information, communication, and financial services, with a figure of minus 0.03%.
