Iran has opened the Strait of Hormuz to a number of friendly countries. As a result, tanker ships from Iran’s allied nations can pass through the strait, which serves as a key oil trade route.

This statement was issued by the X social media account of the Iranian Consulate General in Mumbai, quoting a statement from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. At least five countries are considered friendly, including Pakistan and Russia.

“Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi: We permit navigation through the Strait of Hormuz for friendly countries including China, Russia, India, Iraq, and Pakistan,” the post stated, as quoted from detikFinance on Thursday (26/3/2026).

Additionally, Malaysia has also stated that it has been permitted by Iran to exit the Strait of Hormuz. This decision resulted from discussions with leaders from Iran, Egypt, Turkey, and other regional countries.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that Malaysian tanker ships are allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. In a speech broadcast on television, Anwar thanked Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for permitting Malaysian ships to traverse the Strait of Hormuz.

“We are now in the process of freeing the Malaysian oil tanker and the involved workers so they can continue their journey home,” Anwar said, as quoted from Reuters on Thursday (26/3/2026).

UN Breaks Silence

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on X, he stated that the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz has hindered supplies of oil, gas, and fertiliser at a critical time for the global planting season.

“Across the region and beyond, civilians are experiencing serious impacts and living in deep insecurity. The UN is working to minimise the impact of the war. And the best way to minimise that impact is clear: end the war now,” Guterres said.

Guterres also urged the United States and Israel to end the war in West Asia. He noted that the war only causes deeper suffering for societies.

“My message to the United States and Israel is that it is time to end the war, amid deepening human suffering, increasing civilian casualties, and growing global economic impacts. My message to Iran is to stop attacks on neighbouring countries not involved in the conflict,” Guterres explained.
