Lionel Messi's Story About His Biggest Regret Outside the Football Field
For a megastar with eight Ballon d’Or awards, Lionel Messi actually has a regret that is not related to football. In a recent interview with the Mexican podcast, Miro de Atras, on Wednesday (February 25), the Inter Miami player openly admitted his regret for not taking English lessons seriously at a young age.
Messi realized that this language limitation has had a significant impact on his daily life, especially when he has to build relationships with various people at the international level.
“I regret many things. One of them is not learning English when I was young. I had time to at least learn English and I didn’t do it,” said Messi.
La Pulga, Messi’s nickname, does not deny that he often feels awkward when he is in an environment filled with great people, but he is unable to fully participate in the conversation. He even described this feeling quite honestly.
“When I talk and chat with them, I feel half stupid,” he said.
This personal experience has prompted Messi to now emphasize the importance of education from an early age to his children. He encourages them to make the most of learning opportunities.
“I always tell my children to take advantage of it. They have a different situation from what I experienced even though I never lacked anything,” he added.
Messi’s career journey has forced him to adapt quickly since a young age. He moved to Barcelona at the age of 13, a major transition that certainly affected his education.
Messi recalls that his last days at school in Argentina were difficult because his mind was already focused on his move to Spain. After arriving in Barcelona, he completed his secondary education with other young players at the La Masia academy.
Even though he has regrets about the language, Messi affirms that football has given him invaluable life lessons. For him, the sport that has made him famous is the best teacher.
“Football teaches many things, gives many values. Football creates lifelong bonds. You get to know different places,” said the legend.
Messi’s confession is a reminder to many people that even though someone has reached the peak of success in their field, self-development, such as language skills, remains a crucial part of a broader life journey. (Ant/Z-1)
